Eastby Hall
Eastby Hall, thought to be one of the oldest houses in the village, once again stands proud at the end of Barden Road. This 17th century house overlooking Haw Park, the Lord of the Manor’s deer park, has been sympathetically restored by Bolton Abbey Estate under the guidance of English Heritage.
Due to a broken roof truss the house was in danger of collapse. Local residents were able to watch as the front of the house was taken down and rebuilt using lime mortar. All the original features including, mullion windows and wooden panels have been restored, while fireplaces up and downstairs have been exposed. The eye window looking down Barden Road and the lantern window, in which a candle once burnt to guide travellers across the moor, are indicators as to why this grand house was listed in the 1950’s.
Originally this gracious building was two farm workers cottages forming part of the Hawlands House farm tenancy. There are no records confirming when the two houses became one but it comes as no surprise that this property, with its country house appearance and south facing terraced garden was renamed Eastby Hall in the early 1900’s. Renovations are now complete.
